A.R.E.S. - The Amateur Radio Emergency Services is a part of the American Radio Relay League and helps train and provide operators during times of emergencies. In addition, local A.R.E.S. groups help to provide communications for Public Service Events such as walkathons, bike-a-tones, marathons and special Olympics, just to name a few. Most of the Babylon A.R.E.S. members are members of the Great South Bay A.R.C. and South Shore A.R.C.R.A.C.E.S. - The Radio Amateur Civil Emergency Services is part of Civil Defense. This group provides communication between government agencies during times of a declared emergency. Enrollment in R.A.C.E.S. requires more dedication to Public Service.
SKYWARN - SKYWARN is a program that is part of the early alert process with the National Weather Service that involves both Amateur Radio Operators and Non-Hams to assist in spotting potential severe weather before it occurs.
N.T.S. - The National Traffic System is also a part of the American Radio Relay League and helps train operators to handle formal messages during times of emergencies and daily routines.
NDMS - The National Disaster Medical System is a part of the Veterans Administration and was created to assist with medical care and transport of patients when a large scale disaster is occurring. This operation works along side any existing day to day network (s) and amateur radio involvement requires the passing of data and information of patients in and out of the affected area and the receiving site (s) where the patients will be sent for additional care.
Red Cross - The Red Cross performs many functions in a local community from shelter operations to aiding the needy. Amateur radio involvement with the Red Cross is primarily shelter communications and emergency rescue vehicle (erv) communications, plus some other point to point communications. Ham radio is also used for damage assessment work after the preliminary communications have been handled. RC also uses NTS for Health and Welfare messages into and out of emergency situations and areas. Hams can also become part of "Response Teams" to help out as volunteers.
In the Long Island area, all groups work closely together. Many hams are members of all groups.
Weekly Nets (on the air meetings) for the Town of Babylon Amateur Radio Emergency Services are run on the G.S.B.A.R.C. repeaters every Monday evening at 20:15 ( 8:15 PM EST ).
